The contactless bank card system for accessing and paying for CARRIS transport services is available throughout the CARRIS network, namely on all buses, trams and elevators.
Yes, the system is installed in all validators. However, in the event of a service failure of the contactless bank card payment system at a validator, the card and mobile device symbols will change to indicate the temporary unavailability, and the customer must choose another means of payment for their journey. The system will be restored as soon as possible.
You can use contactless bank cards from the Visa, Maestro or Mastercard network, either the physical plastic card or a virtual card from your smartphone or smart device with NFC technology (Apple Pay, Google Pay or other).
This card will allow you to make post-paid journeys, avoiding the purchase of a pre-paid transport ticket.
To use CARRIS transport services, the bank card must have contactless technology, and these cards can be identified by the concentric arcs symbol. However, some contactless cards may not yet be configured for this type of use. To be sure that your card is suitable for this type of use, please contact your bank to confirm this information.
You can use your smartphone or smartwatch to access CARRIS transport services, as long as the associated card is a VISA, Maestro or Mastercard card and is authorized by your bank to make Mass Transit journeys; the card date has to be valid.

If your card is not valid, you will see a red light with a cross and two short beeps. You should check that the card you have used is suitable for journeys on public transport (meal cards are not valid, for example) and use another card you have, or choose another way of paying for your journey.
Yes, you can buy tickets for up to 10 passengers with a single validation. To do this, you must start your validation by pressing the multi-passenger button and then choose the number of passengers, presenting the card at the end on the reader.

When making the 2nd trip, which will take place on the same day and for that route, you must select the same group size again on the validator, even if the group size is smaller, and approach your bank card, which will not be charged again.
If the group size is larger, you must purchase the on-board fare for the missing members.
No. The presentation of any contactless card (bank or Navegante) must be done separately to ensure that only one card is recognized by the reader. Using multiple cards may result in multiple journeys being charged.
CARRIS, in partnership with SIBS, has developed a payment solution for public transport, commonly known as Mass Transit, which meets the most demanding security and privacy requirements defined by law and by the next associated card brands, namely Visa, Maestro and Mastercard. The solution is certified for reading cards and processing payments associated with journeys.
The value of each trip corresponds to the on-board fare for the vehicle you have accessed, according to the current fare rates. This figure will be multiplied by the number of passengers chosen and the number of journeys made.
CARRIS on-board fare
Bus (1 trip) _ 2,10€
Trams (1 journey) _ 3,10€
Bica, Glória and Lavra Trams (up to 2 journeys) _ 4,10€
Sta. Justa Elevator (up to 2 journeys + access to the viewpoint) _ 6,00€
No. Each validation corresponds to one journey per passenger, equivalent to an on-board fare. When traveling on Bica Gloria or Lavra Tram or the Sta Justa Elevator, each ticket includes up to two journeys per passenger made on the same day and for the same route, according to the active fare rates.
Your contactless bank card has not validated correctly. First check that the contactless bank card is not expired or damaged. If you are able to use the card at other terminals, for example in stores or restaurants, the two most likely situations are (1) the card cannot be used to buy Mass Transit rides (e.g. meal card) or (2) the card has an associated debt resulting from a previous use in which the charge was unsuccessful and is therefore temporarily on a list of blocked contactless bank cards. In this case, you must choose another means of payment in order to make your journey.
The most likely reason for having a contactless bank card blocked is the existence of a travel collection debt from the last trip made. Make sure you always have funds in the account associated with the card to pay for your CARRIS journeys.
If you need further clarification on the status of your card, you should contact your bank and ensure that it is suitable for contactless payments, is valid and has an associated balance.
In order to remove your card from the list of blocked contactless bank cards, you need to settle any outstanding payments associated with trips previously made with the card.
As soon as this situation is settled, the card will be removed from the list of blocked cards and you can travel again with the simplicity that the solution offers.
Payments for journeys made with a contactless bank card are shown on your movements and bank statement with the description “CARRIS”.
The amount does not relate to each individual journey, but to the total number of journeys made during the aggregation period, which is usually daily. It is normal for charges to be processed the following day, usually in the evening.
Therefore, if you make two journeys by coach, you will be shown a single amount for the two on-board fares associated with the two journeys. If you buy multi-passenger tickets or tickets for different types of vehicles, with different on-board fares, you will see that the sum of the journeys you have made coincides with the total charged, according to the fare in force on the date of the journeys.

To increase the security of the system, the cards are periodically checked after they have been validated in the vehicles. Some brands of card, such as Mastercard and Maestro, charge a fee for this verification operation, which will be decommissioned, i.e. not charged, once the journeys made have been properly collected (in aggregate the following day).
The journeys and respective charges associated with contactless bank cards can be consulted on the CARRIS User Portal»»
After accessing the Portal with your credentials (user and password), you must enter your card details – full number and expiration date – so that your account is associated with the contactless bank card you use to travel. If you use several cards, you must enter each card individually.
Once the cards have been linked, you can check the journeys you have made, the payments you have made and, if you wish, request that the associated invoices be issued, either by linking the NIF to the account or when requesting the invoice.
When the ticket inspector asks you for your ticket, you must indicate that you paid with a contactless bank card and show the card, cell phone or device (e.g. watch) you used to validate the trip.
For Mass Transit journeys, the contactless bank card is the ticket itself and, as with other tickets, the inspector will hold your card against a secure device to check that it has been previously validated.
If you do not present a valid ticket for the journey you are making, you will be considered a passenger without a valid ticket and the relevant sanctions and penalties will be applied.
